Samsung Electronics announced that its Smart VoLTE solution has been awarded “Best Solution for Spectrum Optimization” at the Best of 4G Awards, held as part of the annual 4G World event in Chicago.

Samsung’s newly commercialized Smart VoLTE solution enables effective spectrum optimization for both VoLTE and data services through an innovative centralized scheduling and resource-allocation system, helping maintain high voice-quality and stable call connections. The solution enables higher data capacity even when servicing large volumes of voice users, accommodating up to 75% more users in a given amount of spectrum.

Smart VoLTE addresses the core challenge inherent in deploying VoLTE services: maintaining QoS stability even with varying interference in packet data networks. Its interference-aware scheduling system predicts network interference to precisely deploy the resource necessary for voice services, freeing up greater bandwidth for data even with demand from a large number of voice users. The solution also selectively uses multiple cells in a network—or blanks off interfering cells—to facilitate voice services, improving cell-edge performance and maintaining high voice quality.

Overall, Smart VoLTE enables increased efficiency in the optimization of network resources, enabling the management of hundreds of network cells as a single integrated network. The solution also enables smoother handover across cells—with up to 99.5% handover success rate—leading to superior VoLTE service quality.

Smart VoLTE has been initially deployed in Korea through deployments with SK Telecom and LG U+, and will roll out more widely from Q4 2012.

Samsung’s LTE solutions build on the company’s 35 years’ experience in developing and commercializing some of the world’s most popular communication services. Based on its wide range of field-experience in OFDMA technology, Samsung has already successfully partnered with dozens of mobile service providers around the world—including Sprint and MetroPCS in the US, KDDI in Japan, Mobily in Saudi Arabia and Three in UK—to help them implement the most advanced 4G solutions.
