Samsung Electronics and KT Join Forces For World’s First Commercial LTE eMBMS

Samsung’s advanced LTE technology and KT’s cutting-edge service offer seamless HD video broadcasting and multicasting experience for Galaxy Note 3 users

Samsung Electronics and KT, announced that the world’s first commercial eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service) will be made available to KT’s LTE subscribers using the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Samsung partnered with KT to provide its eMBMS network equipment and solutions in support of the service’s rollout. eMBMS is a new LTE technology that enables multiple users to simultaneously and efficiently enjoy HD quality video service for an enhanced multimedia consumption experience.

The world’s first LTE eMBMS, ‘Olleh LTE Play’ service, is powered by Samsung’s advanced network equipment solutions and has been adapted to KT’s LTE network. To access the service, Galaxy Note 3 users will be required to download a software upgrade. The new LTE eMBMS service can be enjoyed through the KT Olleh mobile IP TV application.

LTE eMBMS can serve a large number of subscribers simultaneously without delays or disconnection, just like radio or DMB (Digital Media Broadcasting) services. It also offers significantly higher quality video than standard DMB, while mitigating congestion in the operator’s network. This new technology can be particularly useful for densely populated areas such as sports stadiums or concert halls, where it can provide subscribers with access to multiple broadcast cameras at various angles without delays or disconnection.

“Equipped with a large, vivid display and powerful performance, Samsung Galaxy devices are the ideal platform for innovative mobile technology solutions like LTE eMBMS,” said Jongjin Lee, Senior Vice President of Mobile Sales Team for Korea at Samsung Electronics. “The commercialization of the LTE eMBMS technology through our cutting-edge network solutions will set us apart from others and pave the way for us to offer the latest and the most advanced LTE technologies and products to our customers.”

In an effort to commercialize LTE eMBMS, Samsung and KT have worked together for a number of years to develop network equipment and device solutions. At initial stage, the two companies have showcased the LTE eMBMS technology service at Mobile World Congress in February 2013.

Samsung plans to further strengthen its partnership with KT through joint marketing campaigns and will actively explore partnerships with global mobile operators to promote LTE eMBMS solutions including network equipment and devices.
