As a National Geographic photographer, here is what Marcus Reichmann has to say about photography and digital cameras.

For people who may not know Marcus Reichmann, he is a well-established photographer based in Berlin who made a name for himself with his photojournalism. His work has taken place in many places, including Germany, Kashmir, Morocco, and Croatia, and also exhibited in various international festivals in Germany, Georgia and France. He is currently working on a long-term project in Western Sahara where there are 200,000 people living in refugee camps.

Being a photojournalist, traveling plays a significant role in his work. Reichmann’s work is inspired by his surroundings.  “Places that engage all my senses give a certain energy to my work” he says, “the ability to encapsulate the essence of my surroundings is what defines my work.”

“The perfect shot doesn’t come around too often, that’s why it’s crucial that I’m able to reliably capture the frame, whatever the conditions” Reichmann says.

For a photographer like Reichmann, choosing the right equipment can be tricky. Since he travels a lot, it is better that his camera is light and portable. However, as a photojournalist and a social reporter, a camera needs to support his versatility and spontaneity; and he cannot compensate one for another.

Reichmann recently revealed in an interview with the Huffington Post that he uses the Samsung NX1 and NX lens as he tries not to take too much gear with him; a monopod, two cameras and three to five lenses, no more.

“It’s an all-around camera. It’s definitely good for reportage, like I do, because it’s really small, it has a super-fast auto focus, the image quality is amazing and the usability is amazing. Reportage photography situations often change in a split second, and you need to have a different setting on your camera to deal with this — because you go from outdoors to indoors, or something is happening really quickly and you need to change from single photo to continuous photo, or you need to change your ISO settings really quick. That’s something that I can do blind with this camera.” Reichmann said to Huffington Post.

To brief you on the specification on the NX1 that Reichmann is talking about, the NX1 features 15FPS continuous AF shooting, a unique Auto Focus (AF) System III with 205 Phase Detection AF points and 28MP APS-C BSI CMOS Sensor and 28MP APS-C BSI CMOS Sensor. As far as portability goes, the NX1 weighs only 550g without the battery.

Marcus Reichmann adds that “it can be tough to express an instantaneous feeling in a single photo. With my Samsung NX1, I am able to translate that emotion to tell my story at that moment in time.” If you are an aspiring or well-known photographer who travels a lot and needs a genuine alternative to DSLRs, NX1 is a camera that you want to get to know more about.  Check out the official release and our infographic on the features and specifications of NX1.
