Galaxy S6 and S6 edge Have “Best Displays Ever”

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge’s AMOLED displays captivated users with its fusion of design and display quality when they were unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this month, and took home a long list of awards and honors at the event. After a thorough evaluation, DisplayMate Technologies is offering its high praise as well.

DisplayMate, a company that tests, evaluates and compares all kinds of displays, concluded after thorough laboratory testing that, “The Galaxy S6 matches the Galaxy Note 4 in overall display excellence and record performance and joins it as the Best Performing Smartphone Display that we have ever tested.” The report said that with the S6 and S6 edge Samsung’s engineers were able to match or better the Note 4 in most categories, but were also essentially able to cram all that display performance into a much smaller device.

Quad HD Super AMOLED screen

The S6 and S6 edge are each equipped with 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screens. The pixel density is a remarkable 577 pixels per inch (ppi) – about 77% more pixels than the S5. This allows tiny words on a webpage or e-book to appear more clearly and small images or thumbnails to look sharper. The enhanced display allows the background color, as well as letters and images to appear sharper and differentiated, which adds to the 3D effect.

The powerful display allows users to enjoy real images and videos through a faster response speed of 0.01ms in addition to giving them a wider view. The Super AMOLED display’s color representation is above Adobe’s RGB colors of 90 percent and has a contrast range of 100,000:1.

DisplayMate praised the S6’s improvements in pixel resolution (2560×1440 with 3.7 Mega Pixels), absolute color accuracy (“indistinguishable from perfect”), higher screen readability and contrast in High Ambient Light (“the brightest display we’ve ever tested”) and higher display power efficiency (a 20% improvement over Galaxy S5).

Low brightness and high reflectivity, which made the screens difficult to see outside on sunny days, were issues that needed to be addressed. On auto-brightness, the display can reach a peak of 784cd/m2, and the screen itself is less reflective than ever. In addition, the Galaxy S6 makes bright areas even brighter and dark areas darker, while also increasing the video’s contrast. These features add to the smartphone’s 3D effect in which users can immerse themselves in vivid images that contrast in color.

The Galaxy S6’s Adaptive Display mode has also been greatly improved. Adaptive Display can provide life-like, comfortable image quality according the environment the user is in, adjusting based on the image content and the level of ambient light. Adaptive Display will adjust the white point, color gamut and color saturation according to surrounding color temperatures like subway light (blue) or cafe light (yellow) and the image content. This allows for exceptionally high color saturation and especially vibrant colors, high contrast and vibrant colors, which also helps to make the screen more readable when ambient light is particularly bright.

Of course, the defining feature of the Galaxy S6 edge is dual-sided curved display. Samsung worked hard to achieve both high image quality and design by reformatting relevant display components. The curved glass is the result of a process called 3D Thermoforming, a technology developed by Samsung. The sophisticated glass production procedure results in an elegant finish. But more than elegant, the curved screen is also functional.

Also in Barcelona, Samsung also unveiled its Gear VR Innovator Edition for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. While similar in many ways to the Gear VR for the Note 4, the S6’s increased ppi – 11% over the Note 4 — means the image on VR content is sharper, which makes the immersive effect even more profound. It also means that high resolution movies, TV shows, VOD services and pictures look better than ever.
