Not so long ago, we met with the design team of the NX300 digital camera, and shared the origins of the design of NX300 with our audience. Readers showed a lot of interest in this piece, so we thought it might make sense to get the development team’s side of the story.

When starting any new project at Samsung, it is always extremely important for our users to be able to see a concrete difference from the previous model. Developers of the NX300 have taken the VOC (voice of customer) from the NX200 into consideration and tried their best to address the issues.

Episode of the Developers: NX300

Upon meeting up with the developers the very first thing they wanted to talk about was the Burst Mode. The developers let us know that Burst Mode has improved astonishingly with the NX300. What’s the secret? The new image processing engine and sensor, and the hybrid AF of NX300 has silenced the critics

.

Now that that was out of the way, the developers were eager to talk about the plenty of other adjustments/improvements made on the NX300. For example, the shutter lag has been shortened which enables the NX300 to generate an image that almost perfectly mimics the image in the real world. Also the tilt display allows the users to take shots of their subjects at any angle, from low to high with ease. These improvements have been getting great reactions from all over the world.

We’d now like to turn it over to the rest of the development team so they can share with you some of their professional (and personal!) challenges during the development process.

Enhancing the Camera with New Technologies

Just like many other new Samsung Electronics products, NX300 uses plenty of new technologies. For example, NX300’s DSP (Digital Signal Processor) was a new introduction and the software designed and programmed for it was an entirely new paradigm.

Episode of the Developers: NX300

“As a software developer there are many challenges in coding a new program. For NX300, it was the OS. The Aperture and the lens need to react extremely fast for cameras with high ‘real time’ characteristics. The OS of NX300 had to be compatible with this characteristic, therefore it was very challenging for the developers to create an ‘open source’ software.”

“The weakness of the Mirror-less camera was the ‘slow focus’. To overcome this, we have applied the hybrid AF to NX300. We had to develop a processor and a sensor simultaneously for the hybrid AF. To meet the expectations of the users, we are always at work researching to deliver a better camera”

“All of the developers of NX300 have put a lot of effort into NX300. The tasks of each department were all equally challenging, but we believe working with a positive attitude and outlook has helped us overcome all obstacles.

Surviving the Pressure: How developers cope

Switching gears, we weanted to get some opinions on the kinds of pressures that the team faces– from consumers, bosses, and others.

Episode of the Developers: NX300“To be completely honest, we, the developers, are so busy that we don’t even have time to get a grasp of the intensity of the pressure. Even if we do, we put that time into researching and doing our job. However, I tell my team, ’if they give you any pressure, just remind yourself that the pressure will be off of you once you create the perfect camera’. Sometimes, as a leader, I feel bad because I can’t do a lot to help relieve the stress. However, they are professionals and they want to make the best camera. When the project is over, I take them out to lunch or dinner. I want to take a moment to express my appreciation to everyone in my team. We did a good job!

“The ultimate goal of a camera engineer is to develop the best camera. However, the users’ needs are endless. Therefore, even after we finish our project, we always think about new features or functions for the next camera. Users’ needs can put a lot of pressure on us. However, we are professionals, we have goals and we work towards them.”

Challenges to be the best

Striving for perfection is a tough pursuit, but the development team gave it their all to ensure the highest quality camera as the finished product.

“I think many people don’t know about Samsung’s cameras or don’t have high expectations. We, the engineers, need to change that. We always try to make the best camera, so we add various new features on cameras while focusing on the quality of the core function. There are sometimes that I find it very challenging to develop something new all the time, but when I do, the emotion I feel is indescribable.”

Behind the Scenes

There’s work, and then there’s play.  But for many developers, work runs overtime. We chatted with some to find out how they balance their lives.

Episode of the Developers: NX300

“I’ve got married last year and I spent the beginning of my marriage developing NX300. I was really busy. Newlyweds could have issues with the lack of quality time with their counterparts, especially in the beginning. However, luckily for me, my husband develops Samsung TVs, so I think we understand each other very well. When I have a tough day on the job, he knows how to make my day better. We discuss a lot about each other’s projects and the difficulties that we encounter. He encourages and inspires me a lot. Can I just say one thing to my husband? I love you!”

Episode of the Developers: NX300

“The most difficult part of NX300 was the assembly aspect, because it uses more components than compact cameras. There are many stages to assembling and adjusting, it can take up to 3 days to complete. However, Samsung Electronics always tries really hard to make our work environment better, so we always try harder at work.”

Closing Words

“We believe that NX300 is the best camera out there, so we want our customers to take advantage of it. We truly believe that, not because we made it, but it is the best in terms of value as well! The functions of the camera are perfectly developed, we know that for sure!”

“We know that we see people carrying around Samsung Galaxy smartphones because they are the best. We want people to think of our NX cameras like Galaxy smartphones, the best camera out there! We will do our best and work hard until this happens!”
