With the advent of smartphones, Apps started appearing seemingly out of thin air, and have now become a pivotal part of our life, offering near-limitless access to information. Of course, these apps didn’t just magically appear. Talented programmers and sophisticated technology work tirelessly to create them, and a solid platform is essential for smooth operation.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a second to explain platforms. A platform serves as the basic foundation on which apps run. At this very moment, a fierce competition is underway among a slew of platforms such as Google’s ‘Android’, Microsoft’s ‘Window Mobile’, Nokia & Intel’s ‘MeeGo’, and Apple’s ‘iOS'. Samsung has just thrown down the gauntlet with its own platform called ‘bada’, the Korean word for ‘ocean.’
‘bada’ represents limitless possibilities, and we invite you to ‘dive in’ at the Ocean Center.
We had a chance to speak with Mr. Taegyung Oh to find out more about the Ocean Center.
Q : Can you tell us about Ocean Center?
A : Ocean Center is designed to provide individual developers with opportunities to get hands-on experience with Samsung products as well as its platform and learn more about them. It’s aimed at facilitating cooperation between Samsung and the developers and promoting innovation by establishing training and development programs.
Q : Who comes here?
A : Currently we have a number of individual developers, teams consisting of 3-4 entrepreneurs, and college students engaged in our programs.
Q : What kind of benefits can we expect from using the Ocean Center?
A : Ocean Center is located in the heart of Gangnam business district in South Seoul, easily accessible by all types of transportation, open 24 hours. You will find plenty of seats and PCs available as well as loaner phones which check if newly developed apps are running properly. Also, meeting room facilities we offer will help developers communicate and share ideas.
Q : As soon as we walked in the door, the fact that the interior design enables communication between users grabbed our attention. Now, tell us about training programs you offer.
A : Currently there’s a bada app development course underway for experienced developers, but we also offer a range of programs and courses at different levels for college students possessing basic programming knowledge as well as highly skilled professional developers. And, of course, it’s all free of charge.
Q : We would like to know some of the most popular apps that were created here. Can you tell us what they are?
A : Among others ‘Horror Camera’ comes first on the list, which has hit more than 50,000 downloads at Samsung App Store, followed by ‘Time Attack’ being a promotional app based on LBS(Location-Based Service) and a virtual dating app called ‘Secret of My Heart’.
Our thanks to Mr. Oh, who is passionate about the Center and committed to looking after the customers’ needs with utmost care. We have learned and been assured that the Ocean Center is actively cultivating and supporting passionate and creative developers under Samsung’s new vision “Inspire the World, Create the Future”. Let’s take a tour and get a look inside!
The Ocean Center has a practical design and comfortable setting, allowing developers to mingle with each other and share creative ideas. The walls are adorned with awards they have won from various contests, creating an academic environment as well as a fun place for the developers.
This is where ‘bada’ lectures mainly take place. bada is a brand new platform even to existing app developers, who will get an opportunity to work on and learn about the platform in the classroom. Development rooms offer a range of seats for both long and short term projects; office space is available to develop applications depending on circumstances, and shorter term space comes equipped with Wave phones for testing newly created applications.
Annexed to the classroom are meeting rooms, bearing names such as The Indian Ocean and The Mediterranean Sea, designed to stimulate the imagination and capture the spirit of the Ocean Center. This is where work-related discussions and professional learning take place.
Challenge yourself and live your dreams. Come to the Ocean Center and you will see a fantastic boat ready to explore the endless possibilities of the Ocean!
