Samsung’s Product Innovation Team: How Ideas Becomes Streamlined

When you think about the rapidly changing field of technology, you have to wonder: where does all the innovation come from? What does innovation mean to Samsung? Samsung developed a New Concept Development (NCD) process that all business units could implement and execute when innovating new products and services. As a company, Samsung puts a lot of efforts into innovation. As a p art of Samsung’s overall innovation process, the Project Innovation Team was born out of the need to have an incubator group to work with every business unit to provide more market insight.

“The primary mission (why the PIT was formed) was to change our consumer-facing product development process from engineer-driven to consumer-driven.”


The Team was officially established on September 1st, 2006, and the first PIT office opened in Silicon Valley, California in 2007. The PIT has now expanded globally, though the headquarters remains in California.


PIT’s purpose is to focus on developing production and solution concepts using consumer insight, market-driven technologies and innovation for commercialization.  They do this simultaneously while working directly with the product planning groups for each business unit.


For every concept that PIT develops, the team follows the New Concept Development process which is comprised of Four Stages.


Stage 1. Understand

The first step towards innovation is to understand what trends are exploding in the world. To accomplish this, PIT conducts field research, and collects data, ideas and information to gain insight into the user’s perspective. The team also studies the market and stays current with who and what is making the most noise. 


Stage 2. Ideate

In the second step of NCD, thinkers and designers generate and discuss ideas by analyzing the data collected from field research, essentially brainstorming tens or hundreds of ideas that might provide innovation or solutions to the task at hand.


Stage 3. Concept Development

In this stage, the team compiles all the information they’ve accumulated thus far: the business strategy, the research, and the ideas they’ve generated.  They take this wealth of information and build and refine it into one defining concept. The concept is then developed into a solid business case for the business units.

At the final stage, PIT works with the business units to finalize product concepts based on market and consumer requirements.

    Product Innovation! HA! Here’s product innovation for you:
    Purchased a Samsung “Champ Neo” in Malaysia, being told that it was a world phone (i.e. able to be used on any network, currently in operation, in the world). The phone worked fine in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. I get to South Korea (home of Samsung), to find that the phone will not work on the country’s networks!
    Samsung Malaysia assures me that the phone should work in Korea. The service center near Yeoksam, in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea informs me (after three hours of waiting) that while the phone, with GPRS (GSM and CDMA quad band) and EDGE networks, will work on any other network anywhere in the world – IT DOES NOT, IN FACT, WORK ON SOUTH KOREA’S NEW WCDMA NETWORK!!!!! This is a phone that was released five months ago; yet it is incapable of functioning on the network in the country which licensed its manufacture! I could have bought a three year old iPhone, and it would function quite well on this network. Samsung’s “innovation,” however, seems unable to match this dated technology. Yeah, that’s innovation, alright.
    Lesson learned…..Want a mobile phone that will function seamlessly around the world, including Samsung’s home country? Well then, don’t buy Samsung! They claim to be the “world’s best.” This experience has shown me they are far from that claim.

    Merhaba, yaklaşık olarak 5 aydır Galaxy Note2 kullanıcısıyım. Ürünün kullanımı ile ilgili yaşadığım en önemli sorun tek elle kullanımda ekranın üstünde kalan menü tuşlarına ulaşımın zorluğu. Örneğin; telefon kısa yoluna bastığınızda tuşlar, arama kaydı, rehber tuşları üst tarafta kalıyor ve ulaşımı çok zor oluyor. Rehbere basıyorsunuz akıllı arama yine üstte çıkıyor. Yeni bir yazılımla ekranın üst kısmında yer alan bu bölümleri, ekranın alt kısmına alma seçeneği oluşturulamaz mı? Bu şeklide cihazın kullanımının çok daha pratik hale geleceğini düşünüyorum. Bir önerim daha olacak; o da rehbere girildiğinde kişi araması için sağ tarafa sıralanmış olan harflerin renginin beyaz olması. Eminim o zaman çok daha rahat okunacaklar :) Çok iyi işler çıkartıyorsunuz… Teşekkürler.

    “Ignore No More” has gone viral, and I assume Samsung is scrambling to take advantage of the concept. I filed a USPTO patent application 61/913,589,
    filed December 9, 2013 for a “Parent Priority” invention that was favored over the “Ignore No More” product by 100% of parents in a 200 parent sample poll. This invention is the only thing that I need added to my Galaxy 5. I would be interested in sending the patent application and/or discussing this invention with the Samsung’s Mobile Communications R&D or Patent acquisition team. Time to take a Bite out of the Apple.
