Love triangle between AV, TV and Mobile R&D Groups – How the DA-E750 was born

August 16, 2012 | Comments | Tomorrow Works

A lot of love went into the well polished high-end, tube-powered DA-E750 audio dock and we think it should be impressive enough to win a nice spot on your wish list. This handsome boom box features glass fiber speakers and vacuum tubes to bring you natural and harmonious sounds. What's more, the device can be linked to your Samsung Smart TV* or mobile devices… wirelessly!

Yes the DA-E750 is gorgeous, but the development of it wasn’t as glamorous as you might think. As the DA-E750 was a first of its kind from Samsung, We had to source the best from each field and start from ground zero. Let’s meet the engineering heroes who worked together ‘heading (yes, banging your head) on bare ground’, as we jokingly say in Korea when you try to do something very difficult from scratch, to make this project a reality!

“We needed to make it last” (AV team)

The standout feature, other than this machine’s looks, is Samsung's proprietary vacuum tube / digital amplifier combination, which is said to offer both warm and clear sounds — "the best of both worlds."

The sound quality is the most important part of an audio device. Therefore, tuning is the hardest task for developing an audio. Because DA-E750 is a premium audio, we had to take extra care for sound quality

An audio dock needs to do its job of delivering exceptional sound quality to win users’ lasting love. This was of course a key factor in developing the product. I can’t tell you exactly how we did it due to security reasons, but I can at least bring you a quote from one of our principal engineers.

While tuning the hardware to produce the best of sounds was one thing, engineers were also concerned about making it ‘Samsung sturdy’. Some vacuum tubes won’t that last long but that would be unacceptable of a Samsung product. Our goal was to make an audio device that can last for over ten thousand hours of listening (typically more than 10 years). A lot of effort was put in to ensure long stable use.

Another measure to help use the DA-E750 longer was to make it work even in unfortunate circumstances where the vacuum tube doesn’t. This is possible because this audio dock uses a combination of both vacuum tubes and a digital amp. The DA-E750, thanks to a patented piece of cutting edge technology, automatically recognizes it when a vacuum tube has a problem and switches to using only its digital amplifier. Though we recommend you replace the vacuum tube when it breaks, you can still enjoy great sounds tuned by the digital amp until you can replace it.

"What about an audio dock that can be connected to a TV wirelessly?” (TV team)

This idea actually came from the top. HyunSuk Kim, Executive Vice President and head of the VD Business. Our engineers agreed it’s a good idea and came up with SoundShare, which allows the DA-E750 to be connected to Samsung Smart TVs via Bluetooth*.

The sound output of a TV is normally about 20W but DA-E750, with its two 20W speakers and 60W subwoofer can bring out a maximum total of 100W.  Talk about being blown away!

"It’s gotta work well with smart devices”

To include a docking system for the Galaxy series smartphones, the AV team worked with the R&D team that took part in Galaxy projects. It wasn’t that easy but all went well and the DA-E750 can accommodate your Galaxy or iOS handheld device of choice via a dock, or, for those that like being truly wireless, stream audio via Bluetooth 3.0, AllShare Play or Air Play.

Pioneering new grounds

As mentioned earlier, this is the first wireless audio dock we made, and thus it wasn’t that easy making this product. These are some of what the insiders had to say about it.

This is the first audio docking product from Samsung Electronics. Therefore, we needed to show the products and let consumers feel the amazing sound quality. That’s why I went around the world to promote the audio.

When we saw the final product, we were proud of ourselves. We are more than happy to see this state-of-the-art audio

DA-E750 will blow your mind! I’m sure! If you aren’t a big fan yet, you might need to change your opinion about Samsung audios

Good to see Samsung having analogue engineering smarts, loving the vacuum tubes! Any chance of analogue amplified (tubes, vu meters, VFD displays, aluminium rather than plastic fittings and fascias) quality hi-fi separates components given that many consumer electronics companies have withdrawn from the quality audio space?

purchased Samsung smart TV in January 2012 (UE40 D6530) and could not link it to DA-E750 (October2012) as it does not have  audio bluetooth, only 3D bluetooth, Great !!!
