In 2011, Samsung launched a six-month global search for Torchbearers who had demonstrated how they had “gone the extra mile”. Nominations were received from 58 countries around the world, enabling Samsung’s London 2012 campaign to deliver the most inclusive Olympic Games ever – An Olympic Games for Everyone. Every Torchbearer has been carefully selected for their unique contribution to local communities and their demonstration of the Olympic spirit. 

London 2012 Olympic Torchbearers will have their experience further enriched by the involvement of an array of celebrity Torchbearers, including nine-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist John Legend. Legend is well-known for his work to break the cycle of poverty and improve educational opportunities for all kids through his Show Me Campaign.

Commenting on his Torchbearer invitation, Legend said, “This will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me and I’m looking forward to meeting some of the amazing people from all walks of life that Samsung has invited to take part.”

In addition to Legend, Samsung has selected a number of globally recognized Torchbearers who are known for their continuous inspiration to others. British TV star and campaigner Jamie Oliver, Ivory Coast and Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba, and Vladimir Tolstoy, the essayist and great grandson of Leo Tolstoy, will all join Legend in carrying the Olympic Flame.

Didier Drogba, a star striker playing for Chelsea FC, a football club Samsung has partnered with since 2005, has been nominated as an Olympic Torchbearer. His selection for this role is due to his continuous efforts in improving health and education for African children through the Didier Drogba Foundation, as well as supporting the club’s community and sporting activities for underprivileged youngsters in London. Drogba commented, "It is a great honour to be recognised for the work I do off the pitch, in local London communities or campaigning to improve the lives of children in Africa. It has always been my goal to change things for the better. The Olympic Torch Relay celebrates just a handful of the many extraordinary people that put others’ needs before their own on a daily basis and this is what I will be celebrating.”

The Olympic Torch is the emotional symbol of the Olympic Games, and marks the beginning and the end of the Olympic Games. It also presents an opportunity for the general public to take part in the Olympic Games by offering them a chance to carry the Olympic Flame. Since Athens 2004, Samsung has sponsored the Olympic Torch Relay in two Youth Olympic Games and three Olympic Games, and is now entirely committed to delivering its sixth Olympic Torch for London 2012 to share the Olympic spirit across the world.

The Samsung Caravan will travel with Torchbearers around the UK during the 70-day relay. An interactive LED screen built into the side of the Caravan will feature Olympic Torch Relay highlights as well as avatars of participants for Samsung Hope Relay, a virtual Olympic Torch Relay that allows everyone to take part. The caravan is designed to invigorate audiences and celebrate the Torch Relay. The celebrations will be further enhanced with music and interaction with local communities, including distribution of Olympic keepsakes to crowds.  

To welcome the Olympic Flame and to celebrate the combined efforts of all its Torchbearers, Samsung will join LOCOG (London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) and the host Local Authority to stage an evening celebration event, showcasing a series of exciting shows featuring groups such as ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ dance group Diversity, who will be sure to thrill the crowds. And topping the bill, the special surprise guest of the event will be the brand new Samsung GALAXY S III - Samsung's Olympic Games Phone for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Spectators will be able to visit the Samsung Mobile Trailer to enjoy an immersive entertainment experience and to explore the world’s most advanced smartphone, the GALAXY SIII, before it is released to market.

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will begin its 70-day journey around the UK on Saturday, May 19th , taking in many of the UK’s cultural landmarks. Visiting over 1,000 cities, towns and villages along its 8,000 mile route, the Olympic Flame aims to inspire the UK with the spirit of the Olympic Games and marks the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games prior to its celebrated arrival at the Olympic Stadium on July 27th.

Establishment of Suwon R&D Center 

Further solidifying Samsung Electronics' position as a leader in the electronics market, Samsung expanded its investment to research and development. First of all, in December 1979, Samsung established Suwon R&D Center, which was opened in April 1980. After the development of Suwon R&D Center, it helped Samsung to reach even further into electronics, semiconductors, high polymer chemicals, genetic engineering, optical telecommunications, and aerospace, as well as varied new fields of technology innovation from nanotechnology to advanced network architectures. 

Samsung Semiconductor merged into Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics was only able to procure a limited quantity of semiconductors from Samsung Semiconductors. Samsung Semiconductors didn’t have the technology to provide high quality semiconductors to Samsung Electronics at that time. As a result, Samsung Electronics had to import semiconductors from the other companies. Moreover, other semiconductor companies began halting the supply of semiconductors. As a result of these various challenges, Samsung Electronics decided to acquire Samsung Semiconductors. This process of M&A have created a synergy of production on both electronics and semiconductor parts.

This is the second installment of the detailed review of Samsung’s Second Generation Notebook Series 9! In the first episode, we focused on the exterior of Series 9, and now we will look inside at the internal board composition and conduct several performance tests.

Exquisite Board Design

The disassembled Series 9 NT900X3B-A74 exhibits excellent board design and superb production. One possible improvement would be to split up the battery for a thinner version, but the battery itself boasts a hefty capacity.

In the picture above, colored arrows indicate several key features. The red arrow points to the CPU. For your reference, a HD 3000 GPU (graphic processing unit) core is in here as well. Moving back from the red arrow, two heat pipes branch outward. The blue arrow shows the location of the local RAM. The RAM part drops in performance if heated by the heat pipe, so the silver shield visible here creates a buffer between the heat pipes and local RAM. The yellow arrow denotes a PCH (Platform Controller Hub) chipset.

Two Fans Run Independently, Allowing Stable Usage without Noise

Two fans are included on this model, but usually only the fan that runs is the one for the heat pipe on the CPU side. That is, the fans operate independently. When it gets too hot, both fans begin operating, but that rarely happens. Of course, that’s in Normal Fan Mode. It’s interesting to note that in silent mode, neither fan will turn on. Interestingly, the fan does not start running while surfing the web or watching 720P videos. No fan, no noise. 

I noticed that the aluminum at the bottom panel naturally radiates heat to help keep things cool. So, there is less need for fans, less noise and less dust in your system. All in all, a quieter system that will probably last you longer.

I ran a vaccine and played videos on YouTube at the same time on the Series 9 NT900X3B-A74, while raising the room temperature, to test when the fan would start to run. It did not. I think this proves that it can be used stably despite a certain level of CPU usage. This is good news for those who want some performance as well.

The video below shows the measurement of fan noise while playing video on the new Series 9 laptop. There is no noise as the fan doesn’t run at all in Silent Mode, and this clip explains that. The narration is in Korean, again, so please take note.

In the test above, you can see the performance drop due to clock adjustment in Silent Mode, but there was no issue with watching the video even without the fan running at all. It should be perfect for library use.

It uses about 14.91W at full brightness for back light during video playback. With the back light decreased, it consumes about 10W. In my opinion, this is probably a great choice for a machine in regards to video playback.

Network Guide Band Measurement Result

The wireless LAN used is Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230. It features two antennas.

There was some issue with the wireless signal in the 1st generation product –the aluminum casing used in the Series 9 was accused to interrupt the signal wave. The network guide band of Series 9 was measured. The iperf server was opened at the desktop and the wireless bandwidth of Series 9 was measured right beside the router. The result was Transfer 42.8 Mbytes Bandwidth : 35.8 Mbits/sec.

After opening the iperf server on the desktop, I left the room, closing the door, and took measurements from a distance. The total distance was about 9 meters in length, and measurements were through a concrete wall and closed door. I measured the wireless bandwidth of the new Series 9. It resulted in Transfer 41.9 Mbytes Bandwidth : 35.1 Mbits/sec.

Compared to the closer distance, there was next to no performance drop, so the network signal strength would not be a worry as long as you stay within relatively normal distance.

As the control group, the measurement for Samsung Series 5 at a remote distance (same distance) was Transfer 43.7 Mbytes Bandwidth: 36.6 Mbits/sec. Compared to Series 9, the difference was within the margin of error.

The SSD (solid state drive) used here is a m-SATA type. Samsung produces a fairly high-performance SSD operating in S-ATA3 of 830 series, and thus a fairly high-quality SSD was equipped. Depending on the model, it features 128GB, 256GB or such varieties.

This is the detached bottom panel. Aluminum is used and the inside is all painted as well. In Silent Mode, you feel the bottom part warming up overall, which is characteristic of aluminum cases, offering proof that the heat is being released through the bottom part.

By the way, during disassembly, it appeared that a thermal tape to conduct heat in the middle CPU part would be a more efficient solution for the heat to be drawn to the bottom of the unit. Just an idea.

On April 25th, Samsung Electronics hosted the Samsung Smart Camera NX Series Media Day at its head office in Seocho, Seoul, revealing the 2012 line including the NX20, NX210, NX1000 and such.

From Imaging Business Design Group, Senior Engineer Inshik Kim and Head Designer Yamauchi Kenji shared the design stories of the three NX models in more detail.

Q. Would you briefly introduce yourselves?

Kim Hi, my name is Inshik Kim and I was the PL (Project Leader) for the design of this NX Series.

Kenji I’m Yamauchi Kenji of Digital Imaging Business Department Design Group, and my main duty was to design the mass-production model in this NX Series project.

NX20 - the Essence of Professionalism, Tradition, and the Character of Samsung

Q. Tell us about the main design concept of the NX Series.

Kim The NX Series, unlike DSLR cameras, are mirrorless cameras that don’t have a mirror box. Thus it can capture a high-resolution image despite being small and light, which is a great advantage. The design of the NX Series will be continuously polished to have a clear identity unique to Samsung Camera.

Kenji The 3 models of NX Series revealed at this time contain two different DI (Design Identities). One is a style emphasizing compact mobility, and the other puts more weight on professionalism, like  DSLR cameras. NX1000 and NX210 feature the former DI, and NX20 the latter.

Q. What do you consider most important when working on a design? Tell us about the design philosophy of Samsung Cameras.

Kim Basically, an attractive exterior with convenient user experience is the basic of basics. Unlike home appliances like refrigerators or television sets, cameras are frequently handheld items. We always strive for a design that would leave a lasting impression and satisfaction for you. We aim for a design where you can find more fun the more you handle it.

Q. Tell us about the design characteristics per model in detail. What is the most stand-out characteristic of the NX20?

Kim The NX20 is most characteristic in its professionalism and traditionality. Being a successor to the NX10, the NX20 was developed to be a bold and evolved, not only in design but also in performance. It has the feel of functional and classic DSLR, yet shows off Samsung’s personality.

Kenji NX20 had a reinforced video functionality, so we thought what is more to be improved when taking videos from the user’s perspective. And one of the results of the thoughts was the Swivel Display that allows you to shoot videos from various angles. We expect this Swivel Display to enhance the fun factor when you take the NX20 around to shoot.

NX1000 – Promoting a Simple, Modern and Sensuous Design

Q. NX1000 is most distinct in its colors. Tell us about the characteristics of NX1000 that separates it from other NX models.

Kim NX1000 is the little brother of the NX Series. NX20 and NX210 are for those that want to take more professional photographs while NX1000 is a product for ‘sensuous’ users.  

On top of the basic black and white, we are releasing the pink color together at this time. Coloring the camera body and lens with a sense of unity and emphasizing such attributes a sensuous and friendly image that’s more fun rather than the traditional mechanical approach.

Kenji Not only in color, but we also put a lot of thought in the overall shape. To introduce an exterior distinguished from NX200, which was released last September, there was a change in material as well. Compared to NX200, which has a metal body, this is much warmer and smoother.

Q. Finally, could we have a word for the fans of Samsung Smart Camera?

Kim As we were preparing this lineup, we had an extensive amount of research and preparation to provide users with a more advanced design. We are looking forward to hearing feedback, both positive and negative, from you as you actually get to see them. Hopefully, they’ll be more positive. And we also hope you like the small, cute NX1000.

As the Olympic Flame prepares for its journey across the UK for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, Jamie Oliver and Olympic champion track Cyclist Victoria Pendleton joined forces today to launch a relay everyone can take part in – the Samsung Hope Relay. 

The goal of the Samsung Hope Relay is simple; to encourage everyone around the world to take part in the Olympic Games and leave a lasting legacy. The concept is simple – for every mile completed by those taking part, Samsung will donate £1 to charities such as London-based Kids Company, London 2012's international sports legacy programme, International Inspiration, and an IOC designated charity. 

Want to know how you can get involved?  It’s super easy, and you don’t even have to be a professional athlete!  Download a free app to most smartphones and once you’ve filled in your details and taken a photograph to create your personalised avatar, you can take part. As you complete your mile(s), GPS technology tracks your distance and records the results. Then for every mile completed, Samsung will donate £1 towards the charitable causes. 

Starting with the launch in UK, the Samsung Hope Relay initiative will be expanded to approximately 20 countries around the world*, enabling everyone to take part, at least virtually, in the Olympic Torch Relay. Samsung will partner with a variety of charitable organizations to carry out social contribution programs based on the donated resources to help children in communities across the world. 

At the official launch today in London, Jamie and Victoria unveiled a giant ‘Samsung Wall of Hope’ - a structure which spelled out the words ‘Samsung Hope Relay’ and housed hundreds of pairs of sneakers that participants could put on and complete their mile along a specially laid track. Jamie and Victoria were the first to take a pair of trainers from the wall and complete a mile round the Samsung track in front of one of London’s most famous landmarks, City Hall, overlooking the River Thames.

Also supporting the initiative were other well-known faces who have recorded motivational videos and messages of support for those taking part. Speaking at the launch Jamie Oliver said “The Olympic Games and the Olympic Torch Relay have really captured everyone's imaginations, and now the Samsung Hope Relay is a great chance for all of us to take part and raise funds for some really inspirational charities in the process. I’ve done my mile and would love everyone to download the app, get out there and do the same.”

Olympic Games medal hopeful Victoria Pendleton, who cycled her mile with some of those that have benefited from the Kids Company’s work, said:  “It was a real inspiration to meet some of the people who have embraced the support Kids Company has offered them be able to go on to lead a meaningful and rewarding life. I’ve been training hard for the Olympic Games and now it’s just around the corner so it’s time for everyone to get involved – the Samsung Hope Relay is a great way of raising funds for deserving causes, like Kids Company, and letting everyone take part in the Games.”

In addition to raising funds for charity and helping to leave a lasting legacy beyond 2012, those who take part in the Samsung Hope Relay will also get a chance to become part of the Olympic Torch Relay, which kicks off on 19th May.  Samsung will be displaying people’s avatars on the huge screen of its caravan which will form part of the Olympic Torch Relay convoy travelling the length and breadth of the UK over 70 days this summer. All participants need to do is create an avatar online, upload a photo of themselves and they have a chance to see their picture on Samsung’s big screen as the Torch Relay visits their UK community.
